Sanctuary of Self, 2024
This whimsical work explores the concept of sanctuary from an intensely personal perspective. Within the dreamlike surreal ambiance of this piece, I invite viewers into a realm where sanctuary is not merely a physical space but a state of mind—a refuge from the chaos of the external world. At the heart of this sanctuary, one finds a collage of personal artefacts—books, chairs, artworks, and cherished mementos—that collectively narrate the story of the self. Each object in the painting carries its own significance, serving as a testament to the journey of introspection and self-discovery. Amongst these artefacts, a cat becomes not just a companion but a symbol of quiet contemplation and solace. However, the sanctuary is not hermetically sealed from the outside world. Through the archway, the encroaching presence of the beach and its waves hint at the relentless passage of time and the ever-changing nature of existence. This interweaving of the interior and exterior landscapes underscores the fluidity of sanctuary—how it is both a retreat from the world and an engagement with it. Through the surreal aesthetic of the piece, I aim to evoke a sense of wonder and introspection in the viewer. The distortion of reality serves to mirror the complexities of the inner world, where memories, dreams, and emotions intertwine to create a multifaceted tapestry of the self. Ultimately, "Sanctuary of Self" is an invitation to delve into the depths of one's own psyche, to seek refuge amidst the chaos, and to find solace in the beauty of introspection. It is a reminder that, even in the midst of turmoil, there exists a sanctuary within each of us waiting to be discovered.
